They survived almost daily prairie fires, lightning, heat, blizzards, snakes, grasshoppers, and boredom with tenacity, faith, and fortitude, and usually with a sense of humor. Susan E. Church will present “The Grass is Near Readiness and So…We Set Forth,” at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, in the Event Center. She is a historian, retired museum executive director, and a speaker on westward migration, women’s roles in the 19th Century, and American Civil War topics. She has held many positions and is a nationally recognized Civil War historian.
