Visit the Eisenhower Museum: Presidential Library, Museum, Boyhood Home and WWII Exhibit

on February 20, 2014

Residents and Passport members are invited to join in the day trip adventure to Abilene, Kan., for a tour of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Museum and dine at the Brookville Hotel. The excursion is set for Thursday, March 13.

Transportation will depart for Abilene at 1 p.m. from the Village Entrance. After arriving, we will take a self–guided tour of the Boyhood Home of Eisenhower.

Next, we will visit the museum and view a movie of the life of Eisenhower. The museum is divided into five major galleries consisting of an introductory gallery, a changing exhibits gallery, a First Lady's gallery, a military gallery and a presidential gallery. Of special interest and importance is the changing exhibits gallery. A different exhibit is presented periodically so that repeat visitors can always experience something new.

The special exhibit on display is the World War II Remembered: Leaders, Battles & Heroes, that presents an inclusive commemoration of the pivotal events of World War II. What makes this exhibit stand out from other interpretive WWII exhibits is the focus on personal stories. World War II Remembered will strive to honor the unsung heroes and tell the lesser known stories of the time. The accounts of such groups as the Tuskegee Airmen, Native American Code Talkers, the brave contribution of the Ritchie Boys, and the heroic stories of women at war and on the working home front will be shared.

After departing the museum, the group will enjoy family-style dining at the legendary Brookville Hotel, famous for its fried chicken dinners!

The cost of the trip will be between $38 and $45 per person, depending on the amount of people in attendance. This cost will include admission to the museum, dinner at Brookville Hotel (including family style chicken dinner, a beverage and gratuity) and transportation to Abilene and home again. If you are interested in coming along, register by signing up in the Blue Book. The cost of the trip will be added to your March finance statement.
